St. Veronica

Here is how I came across the subject and what prompted me to paint it -
 
I took a trip to Europe 2 years back and was fortunate to visit the St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Vatican along with the other European splendors.
When I was appreciating the beauty of the sculpture of St. Veronica by Francesco Mochi, I observed the face of Jesus the savior on her veil.
I was curious to learn the story behind. I was moved by the kindness of Veronica in learning that she wiped face of Lord Jesus on the way to the cross and his face appeared on her veil. She is then said to have acquired healing powers. How great is she to have comforted the Lord Jesus himself! I immediately knew I had to paint it and share what I experienced with my viewers.  
 
Here is something funny that happened... 
It had been months after I returned from the trip and every now and then I would feel guilty for still not working on the painting. I think I was a little bit scared at the complexity and the big size that I wanted to paint. (Some things have to be painted large to really get the full impact!) Finally, it so happened that I met two ladies, a Starbucks Coffee Vendor at my work and another, a new, day care provider for my son both named Veronica on the same day. I felt like it was divine intervention reminding me to take up the project. So, I finally started work on this painting and it took me almost 3 months to complete. I used Gemini 300lb paper and only 5 different watercolors.
